The City of Des Arc, a city of the second-class, is a Mayor-Council form of government. Des Arc is comprised of six council persons in three wards with two council persons representing each ward along with the Mayor and the Recorder-Treasurer.

Local elections are some of the most important as they directly impact our community. The candidates are people you know. Officials work with the Mayor. City Council members have the final vote in creating laws and approving a city budget while the Recorder-Treasurer records the proceedings of council meetings and assists in maintaining records.

City Council members serve a two-year term while the Mayor and Recorder-Treasurer serve a four-year term. Officials normally attend one regularly scheduled council meeting on the third Tuesday of each month, but may be asked to attend work (discussion/informational) meetings or special-called council meetings occasionally. They may also serve on selected committees for many areas and/or departments of the city.
